HOW IT WORKS
THE BOOM CRD
The groundbreaking BOOM CRD by Sonic ReVision is the ultimate bass drum upgrade. Easy to use, it transforms the tone of any acoustic bass drum—improving the low, mid and high frequencies—for a deeper, fatter, more balanced sound in any playing environment.
Combining groundbreaking Compound Resonance™ technology with advanced materials and manufacturing methods, The BOOM meets the needs of normal playing conditions as well as high-volume, high-intensity drumming applications—providing increased security with an extra-strong magnetic mounting system for fast, secure mounting.
It’s removable, reusable and highly effective in adding depth and punch to any bass drum’s sound.
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
MAGNETIC MOUNTING SYSTEM
54 precision-engineered rare-earth magnets create up to 24 newtons of gripping force for fast, secure mounting. Computer-assisted manufacturing guarantees proper alignment and consistency for peak performance.
PATENTED COMPOUND RESONANCE™ MEMBRANE
The custom engineered vibrational system adds its sub-frequency vibrations to your bass drum while enriching upper harmonics for a noticeably fuller, more resonant sound.
(U.S. and International Patents Pending)
GO FROM FLAT TO FAT!
Our spectrum analysis shows a measurable increase in low-frequency amplitude and overall harmonic content, making your drum sound bigger, including 16” and 18” bass drums.
INCREASED PUNCH
Delivers power and articulation by optimizing and equalizing the drum’s tone acoustically—reducing the need for additional muffling and giving kick drums the punch they need to cut through any mix in any musical situation.
REMOVABLE & REUSABLE
Durable, rugged and ready for the road as well as the studio, the BOOM is as easy to remove as it is to install. Designed for easy transport and a lifetime of musical use. Sound engineers love it too!
CROSS-COMPATIBLE
A true upgrade, the BOOM enables drummers and sound engineers to optimize the sound and performance of any bass drum or drumhead—any brand, any type, any size.
OPTIMIZE YOUR BOOM
Here are some suggestions to help you achieve optimal performance in any live or studio situation. Keep in mind these are only suggestions based on our experiences and preference. Don’t be afraid to experiment to get the sound you like.
HEAD SELECTION
For a good starting point, we recommend a single-ply head for the resonant side (with or without an internal muffling ring) that has a standard, 5″ port at the 4:00 position.
We suggest a pre-muffled, double-ply head for the batter side.
Feel free to try different drumheads to find the appropriate sound and feel for your drum and situation.
GENERAL NOTES
- Different drums, drumheads and rooms as well as the way you play will all affect your sound. As we said, don’t be afraid to experiment to get the sound you like.
- The BOOM can also be used effectively on unported resonant heads. It just requires taking one of the heads off the drum to install, adjust and remove it
- The BOOM is designed to enhance the acoustic sound of bass drums in live and studio situations. It is not recommended for use with heavily muffled drums, when triggering or when digitally replacing the acoustic bass drum sound.
TUNING
Start with both heads loose but without wrinkles. For modern musical applications, the batter head should be a little tighter than the resonant head.
Then, adjust the tension evenly to find the drum’s “sweet spot”. That’s the point where the drum has a balance of clarity and punch along with resonance and fullness.
MUFFLING
Our general rule-of-thumb is to use as little muffling as necessary. The drum sound should be dry and focused, not dead. Many drummers use a standard bass drum pillow placed against the Batter head and touching the Resonant head to achieve a professional, studio-quality bass drum sound.
INSTALLATION
See Important note below!
Follow the previous tips to start with a good acoustic drum sound. Then add the BOOM to make it a great acoustic drum sound! For best results, place the BOOM 2-3″ away from the edge of the drum— even if it is not centered on the hole in the head.
Use the “Key Lug” to adjust the tuning of the resonant head as needed and dial-in the sound you prefer. The Key Lug is usually located opposite the BOOM (at the 10:00 position). We’ve found that slightly loosening the Key Lug once the BOOM is installed can really make the drum sing.
MIKING
Miking the bass drum is one of the most important and effective ways to take advantage of the BOOM’s sound enhancement capabilities. A guide for miking the BOOM in studio and live situations will be available soon.
INSTALLATION
Inner Ring
Main Body
With the innovative magnetic mounting system, the Inner Ring is placed inside the drum head and snaps onto the Main Body which is on the outside.
IMPORTANT!
For proper installation, the Inner Ring (that goes inside the drum) has two sides: one flat and magnetic, and one with holes. Always position the flat, magnetic side so that it faces the bass drum head. This ensures it will attract and hold the Main Body of the BOOM CRD securely in place.
